Driving the adoption of data flows in the supply chain by integrating intelligent and decentralized control for large-part manufacturing

Europe leads the manufacturing of complex, large-scale components. In Spain, the metalworking sector is also booming, with significant growth (>8%) in recent years. This privileged competitive position is supported by the quality of the manufactured products, their characteristics, high level of customization, efficiency, and associated lifecycle services. However, compliance with increasingly stringent regulations, high quality requirements, and product complexity are reaching the limits of existing technologies, threatening competitiveness in the sector and its current privileged position. CASANDRA was created to address these challenges.
The main objective of the CASANDRA project is to develop a closed-loop digital manufacturing methodology that enables the concepts of a connected, smart, and autonomous factory, allowing the evolution of the digital twin of the component to be manufactured to be recorded throughout its lifecycle. This requires distributed monitoring and control tools, following a distributed data space model.
At the factory level, CASANDRA proposes the development of flexible, ubiquitous, and connected digital tools (collaborative robotics, AR/VR, and exoskeletons), designed to extend operator capabilities and increase efficiency, quality, and precision in the execution of the required manufacturing processes.
Monitoring and control tools, combined with cross-functional digital tools, pave the way for the implementation of data analysis strategies that allow the collected data to be exploited. This allows CASANDRA to implement an autonomous factory concept through a decision support system in which, based on the live data collected, strategies are developed to adjust processes and continuously adapt to changing conditions and the degradation of physical models. This involves working on edge intelligence, federated learning, and frugal AI, combining active learning and XAI.
To this end, CASANDRA aims to achieve the following technical objectives:
- Implement a modular and hierarchical digital thread that drives data interoperability throughout the value chain to improve traceability, efficiency, and quality in the manufacturing and assembly of large parts.
Digital platform and middleware, digital thread, knowledge representation. - Implement worker-centric tools that assist in the execution of labor-intensive tasks while preserving their knowledge and skills.
Co-working robotics, VR/AR, user experience optimization. - Implement data-driven decision support models for more efficient and sustainable autonomous manufacturing through the integration of product, process, and resource (PPR) digital twins.

DGH– Empresa española ubicada en el Parque Tecnológico de Boecillo (Valladolid) especializada en ingeniería y mantenimiento industrial. Con más de 40 años de experiencia, DGH se destaca en el diseño, construcción y puesta en marcha de soluciones automatizadas y robotizadas para diversos sectores industriales. Es un referente en la industria de automoción y ha ampliado su actividad a sectores como aeronáutica, construcción y alimentación. Empresa innovadora con participación en programas de innovación tanto nacionales como europeos.
IDESA – Fundada en 1993, y sede en Asturias, se ha convertido en una de las empresas más reconocidas y respetadas en diseño, fabricación y suministro de equipos estáticos y modulares en todo el mundo para el sector energético, especializada en componentes de grandes dimensiones y con altos estándares de calidad, tales como cámaras de coque, columnas de vacío, columnas fraccionadoras, reactores y unidades FCC y FCK; así como todo tipo de tanques de almacenamiento y equipos de proceso.
ONS – Es una empresa fundada en 2010 con sede en Madrid, que se especializa en soluciones de gestión de infraestructura en la nube y virtualización. La compañía se dedica al desarrollo y soporte de OpenNebula una plataforma de código abierto que permite la implementación y administración de entornos de cloud computing y centros de datos virtualizados.
NODOSA – NODOSA SHIPYARD es una empresa española, con sede en Galicia, líder en el sector naval. Especializada en la construcción, reparación y mantenimiento de buques, cuenta con más de cinco décadas de experiencia y se ha consolidado como un referente tanto a nivel nacional como internacional, destacándose por su capacidad de innovación, calidad y compromiso con la excelencia.
ARSOFT – Empresa tecnológica española enfocada en el desarrollo de sistemas de Realidad Aumentada y virtual (AR&VR) para el sector industrial, transformado los tradicionales procesos de producción en procesos de producción inteligentes.
ARSOFT ha desarrollado su propia plataforma de authoring (Eyeflow) para la digitalización de procesos industriales con tecnologías de realidad mixta (XR), alcanzando acuerdos con grandes empresas líderes en su sector.
TRIMEK – Empresa fundada en 1993 en Altube (Álava), centra su actividad en el área de la ingeniería metrológica dimensional, desarrollando sistemas de medición como Máquinas de Medición por Coordenadas (MMCs), sistemas de escaneado 3D, plataformas informáticas de gestión metrológica para diferentes sectores industriales, tales como automoción, aeronáutica, naval, energía, transporte o máquina herramienta.
GOGOA – PYME constituida en 2015, con sede en Abadiño (Bizkaia), dedicada al diseño, fabricación y comercialización de exoesqueletos para mejora de las capacidades físicas de las personas. Con una de las gamas de productos más amplias del mercado y una sólida cartera de propiedad intelectual fruto de su sostenida apuesta por la I+D+i, dispone de soluciones para el mercado clínico, industrial, militar y deportivo.
NVISION – Empresa tecnológica especializada en llevar al mercado soluciones innovadoras basadas en Internet de las cosas (IoT), que combinan tecnologías como la Inteligencia Artificial (IA), el análisis de datos (Big data, data analytics) y la computación en el Edge, para proporcionar servicios orientados a la monitorización y gestión avanzada de sistemas, incluyendo desarrollo de herramientas de soporte a las decisión y gemelos digitales aplicables a distintos sectores.

AIMEN – The AIMEN Technology Center is a multi-sector innovation and technology center with 58 years of history that has established itself as a national benchmark in R&D and the provision of technological services in key areas such as materials, advanced manufacturing processes, digitalization, and sustainability.
Our areas of expertise include manufacturing technologies such as joining technologies, laser technologies, additive manufacturing, and composite materials processing, as well as cross-cutting technologies such as robotics, sensors and monitoring, and artificial intelligence that facilitate the digitalization of industrial processes.
The ultimate goal is to transfer the developed technologies to industry to transform current factories into smart factories that are more efficient, sustainable, and globally competitive.
IRI – The Institute of Robotics and Industrial Computing is a joint university institute belonging to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), founded in 1995. It is one of the leaders in robotics and computer vision research in Spain, given the volume and quality of its scientific output and its significant presence in European R&D projects with various international partners. The center offers excellence and technological capabilities in various fields of robotics, computer vision, artificial intelligence, and automatic control, among others.
CDEI-UPC – The Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) is an internationally recognized higher education institution focused on engineering, architecture, applied sciences, and technology. It stands out for its leadership in research and technology transfer, positioning it as a benchmark in both the academic and business fields. The CDEI-UPC, the Center for Industrial Equipment Design, specializes in the development of industrial products and equipment, dynamic analysis of complex systems, and mobile robotics, collaborating closely with national and international companies to innovate in the design and optimization of industrial equipment.
CITIC-UDC – CITIC is a research center that promotes progress and excellence in R&D&I applied to ICT, created in 2008 by the University of A Coruña. The center’s scientific activity is structured into four main research areas: Artificial Intelligence; Data Science and Engineering; High-Performance Computing; and Smart Networks and Services, and a cross-cutting research area: Cybersecurity.
CITIC is accredited as a Center of Excellence and a member of the CIGUS Network for the period 2024-2027. The accreditation, structuring, and improvement of the CITIC is co-financed by the Xunta de Galicia (Government of Galicia) and 60% by the European Union within the framework of the Galicia 2021-2027 ERDF Operational Program, with the thematic objective of promoting “a smarter Europe: innovative and intelligent economic transformation.”
INNOVALIA – The Innovalia Association is an R&D&I business unit and member of the Basque Science and Technology Network and Technology Center founded in 2002 by a group of technology SMEs with an international presence. This private research laboratory was created by the INNOVALIA group to form a solid foundation for achieving its long-term strategic research objectives.
